The trend of the automotive industry towards electrical and autonomous driving, as well as the increasing networking of vehicles are challenging for on-board electrical systems and components. We have offered solid state relays for continuous currents between 1 A and 200 A with and without integral overcurrent and short circuit protection for the automotive industry for about ten years. Many customers appreciate the benefits of electronic switching, such as low control currents, low heat and noise development, high switching cycles and high cycle frequency. These benefits justify the higher product costs.

For some time, a series of developments and new requirements have pushed the use of electronic switching, protecting and power distribution solutions. Also in higher performance areas.

  • Stricter exhaust gas regulations (EURO VII, EP27, etc.) put the focus on using electric exhaust gas heaters with high performance and many switching cycles.
  • In electric vehicles, the combustion engine is no longer used as energy source for secondary loads, such as pumps and fans. Electronic switching on demand increases the efficiency and the typical life of components and systems. At higher voltages such as DC 48 V or DC 96 V, arcs in electromechanical switching devices limit the service life - electronic relays switch without wear and arcing.
  • Consistent uptime of on-board electrical systems is the basic requirement for (partly) autonomous driving. Extremely fast disconnection of defective sub-systems without retroactive effects makes electronic solutions an interesting option.

New on-board electrical network architectures, the demand for higher system transparency and solutions that can be updated promote the trend towards electronic, intelligent power distribution systems. These systems provide many benefits, as they are compact, energy-efficient, service-free, remotely resettable, configurable and programmable.
